Accessing eduroam with WindowsXP

0 To connect to eduroam you need:

  • 802.11 a, b, g or n wireless network card
  • Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Money on your Canterbury Card
  • Your UC usercode and password

To use eduroam reliably, High Priority Windows Updates that have occurred since Service Pack 2's release also need to be installed.

Note: You will incur charges when using the wireless network service.

Setting up the connection to eduroam requires the following steps to be followed exactly:

Double-click on the wireless icon in the system tray at the bottom-right of the screen.  This will open up a window listing your available wireless connections.

This window can also be opened by right-clicking on the wireless system tray icon, and selecting View Available Wireless Networks from the menu that appears, as illustrated.

There may be a pause for a few seconds as the wireless card scans for available wireless networks in the immediate vicinity.  Once this is complete a list similar to the one illustrated should appear.  The item we want to connect to is called eduroam, but first it needs to be configured.

Click on eduroam so it is highlighted, as illustrated, then click on the change advanced settings option in the menus on the left hand side.

The Wireless Connection Properties window will now appear, listing the wireless card and the protocols it is using.  Click on the Wireless Networks tab, at the top of the window, to reveal the settings shown in the illustration below.

In here the tick-box at the top, "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" should be ticked if it isn't alredy.

Click the Add... button, near the bottom left of the window, to configure the eduroam settings.

In the Network name (SSID) field you should enter "eduroam", and this entry is case-sensitive so it is important what it is entirely lower case.

The Network Authentication field should be set to "WPA2", and the Data Encryption field should be set to "AES", as illustrated.

If it isn't unticked already, untick the bottom tick-box: This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network...  Then click the Authentication tab to continue.

In this section make sure the EAP type is set to "Protected EAP (PEAP)", and that both tick-boxes below are unticked, as illustrated.

Then click the Properties button to continue.

In the Protected EAP Properties window, make sure the validate server certificate tick-box is ticked, and the connect to these servers tick-box below it is unticked, as illustrated.

Then make sure the two tick-boxes below: Do not prompt user to authorize... and Enable Fast Reconnect are unticked.

The Select Authentication Method option should be set to "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)"

Now click the Configure... button to continue.

In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window, the tick box Automatically use my Windows logon name... should be unticked.

Click the OK button to close this window, and then OK to close the Protected EAP Properties window, then OK to close the Wireless Network Properties window.

Back in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window there should now be a new item "eduroam" listed in your Preferred Networks list.

If any other UC wireless network is also listed there, either delete it or make sure that it is below "eduroam" by using the Move buttons to the right.

Then click the OK button to close this window.

After some time a Wireless Network Connection notification should appear above the System Tray, as illustrated.  Click on it to login.

When logging in here, enter your username and password into the appropriate fields with the username in the form usercode@canterbury.ac.nz (e.g. abc123@canterbury.ac.nz) , but leave the logon domain field blank.

This logon is also case-sensitive, so make sure your username is entered in lower-case, and that caps-lock is off.

Then click the OK button to continue.

After a brief pause another Wireless Network Connection notification should appear above the System Tray, as illustrated.  Click on it to confirm the certificate.

Click OK to valididate the server certificate.

After a brief pause the status of the eduroam connection will change to "connected."  A notification bubble will probably also appear above the wireless icon in the taskbar to inform you of your connection status.

You are now able to access web sites and other resources both on and off campus.
