Wireless Networking

Introduction

ICT Services currently offers wireless network and Internet access in many locations on campus based on 802.11 standards. All you need is a wireless-capable computer and a valid ICT username and password to begin using this service. Once connected you will have access to the University network and can make use of network resources such as Internet access, email, file servers and library databases.

Connect Now

Use the following link to automatically configure your wireless client to connect to the UC eduroam wireless network. The XpressConnect Configuration wizard supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Ubuntu: 9.04+, Mac OS-X 10.4+, iPhone/iPad OS 2.x+. It does not currently support Android, Windows Mobile or Windows Phone.

If you have any trouble with this configuration tool, or have an unsupported operating system (Android, Windows Mobile and Windows Phone devices are notable examples), then you should manually configure.

Wireless Charging

Wireless traffic is charged by volume. All users get the first 5GB of wireless traffic per day free and any traffic over that limit is charged at 0.1c per MB.

Note that wireless charges do not include Internet charges, so if you access the Internet through one of the wireless networks normal Internet traffic rates will apply on top of any wireless charges. It is also important to note that all wireless traffic is charged for including traffic to and from University resources such as Learn.

Coverage

To make use of the UC wireless networks you must be in range of a wireless access point. The maps linked below show the current wireless coverage across the two main sites. Note that this is a rough guide only as wireless coverage can vary greatly depending on the client being used and many other factors. Many buildings' wireless coverage extends to outside surrounding areas and some buildings noted as having no wireless coverage may have some limited coverage from a neighbouring building with coverage. The following remote sites also have wireless coverage:
  • Cass Field Station
  • Harihari Field Station
  • Kaikoura Field Station
  • Mt John Observatory
  • Reading Recovery Unit
  • UC Nelson Centre
  • UC Tauranga Centre
  • Westport Field Station

Available Networks

  • eduroam – default network for all UC staff and students. It also allows staff and students of other eduroam participating institutions to connect at UC and UC staff and students can also use the eduroam wireless networks at other participating institutions.
  • UC-setup-wireless - an unencrypted network that when connected to will display these wireless configuration web pages.
  • UCvisitor – an unencrypted, limited service network that is a last resort should a user be unable to connect to the eduroam network. Coming soon: short term wireless access for visitors to UC - watch this space!
  • UCwireless – now obsolete and remains only for existing configured clients. Has been superceded by the eduroam network and will be retired at the end of 2012.
